Concept of Hijab and Agency of Muslim Women

Instructor: Susanne Goetz
Course title: Screen Printing Scarves
Lesson title: Concept of hijab and Agency of Muslim Women

I taught TD 361 Screen Printing Scarves in Fall 2021. In week 11 I introduced the concept of hijab, the diversity within the global Muslim community, and the individuality agency of Muslim women in deciding to wear hijab. Students were given a reading assignment and asked to write a short reflection on it.

In week 12 I invited a guest speaker for a 1-hour lecture and discussion. Students participated in a visual research assignment to create a communal Padlet with hijab images and a short note why they chose specific images.

In week 13 the class briefly discussed their takeaways from the lecture and reviewed the padlet.

If I teach this again in the Fall semester, I will change review the time frame given to cover this topic; start outreach to the guest lecturer earlier to discuss the best approach; focus less on the market aspect; discuss Islam specific design considerations; expand the reading list shared on BB; reach out to the Muslim Student Union at FIT.
